The latest release from the Texas-based jazz collective Snarky Puppy is an album in collaboration with a young Burundian refugee named Bukuru Celestin. Amkeni, meaning “awake” in Swahili, expertly combines elements of Snarky Puppy’s sound with the traditional African elements that Celestin brings to the table. At first listen, I was immediately reminded of of Paul Simon’s legendary Graceland, and the cross of cultures provides for a memorable and inspiring listening experience. The story of how the album came to life is very impressive, and I suggest you read about it and check out the entire album here. You can listen to the opening song “Ndagukunda” below.
